PEARL TYPE
Cook Islands Pearls:
* Cultured Pearls:
See Pearl History for Cook Islands Cultured Pearl Industry information.
* Keshi Pearls:
Formed alongside Cultured Pearls, Keshi (Japanese for poppy seed) Pearls are unique, smaller, irregular shaped pearls. As Keshi Pearls do not contain a nucleus, shapes are often irregular or baroque.
Keshi Pearls can be made into stunning necklaces & bracelets with more symmetrical Keshi used for Rings, Pendants and Earrings. Sizes range from 2-8mm.
* Natural Pearls:
From the enormous lagoon of the Cook Islands most isolated atoll, Penrhyn (or Tongareva), beautiful, golden coloured Poe Pipi (natural pipi pearls) are found in perhaps the worlds smallest pearl producing mollusk, Pinctada Maculata.
Documented in the 1908 Industry Bible, 'The Book of The Pearl', (Kunze/Stevenson), the natural pearl beds of Penrhyn have historical significance.
Collected since the 19th century, the pearl beds of Penrhyn have since suffered environmental harm.
Typical pearl sizes range from 2mm-6mm. A very limited amount of natural pearls are still found today.
* South Sea Pearls:
From Australia, the Philippines & Indonesia, South Sea Cultured Pearls are famed for their incredible size & natural colour.
With symmetrical sizes reaching 22mm, their iridescent white, silver, rose and gold colours are truly captivating. Alongside Black Pearls, South Sea Pearls are the most desired pearls in the world.
Well known South Sea Pearl Farmers include The Paspaley Family of Australia and Jacques Branellec (Jewelmer) of the Philippines.
